Futures tennis tournament continues in Williamsville; Lin plays singles Wednesday

The Sargent & Collins, LLP Men’s $15,000 Futures Tournament continued on Tuesday at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville with first-round play. Only one seeded player was in action in singles. Gonzalo Lama of Chile, the top seed, took the first step in the event with a straight-set win over Josh Silverstein of the USA.

In doubles, the top-seeded pairing of Farris Fathi Gosea of Great Britain and Kaichi Uchida of Japan was eliminated in the first round. They lost a thriller to Mwendwa Mbithi of the USA and Washi Geravis of Canada, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8. Former Williamsville East High School standout Winston Lin teamed with Raleigh Smith to win an opening doubles match against Cameron Silverman and Quinton Vegas, 7-5, 6-1.

Lin will play in his first singles match today at 11 a.m. The event’s sixth seed will take on Simon Navarro of Chile. Six other seeded players will take part in first-round matches as well this afternoon.

There is no admission fee.
