MOREAU – One run and a no-hitter were all Depew needed to reach the state championship in softball for the first time.
Karsen Cotton struck out 10 and kept Section XI champion Babylon in check as the Wildcats advanced to their first New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association championship game with a 1-0 triumph over the previously unbeaten Panthers.
Depew pushed the only run across in the top of the seventh via squeeze play in the Class B semifinal at Moreau Recreation Park near Glens Falls. Ashley Crawley's bunt plated courtesy runner Katelyn Szefler from third.
The Wildcats face Solvay of Section III at 5:30 p.m. for the championship.
Babylon finishes 24-1 as the Panthers won several games during the season via mercy rule but were kept in check by Cotton's ability to change speed and location on her pitches.
Depew had a chance an inning earlier to take the lead on Jordyn Petyk's single to center but a strong throw by Emily McGurk to pitcher Allie Stanya who completed the relay throw to home nailed Andrea Taboni by inches for the final out of the frame.
Annie DiPirro went 1 for 3 in the win for Depew.
