The two largest towns in Erie County are both saying no to new cellphone towers.
After Amherst joined the Town of Tonawanda in a cellphone tower moratorium this week, the Town of Tonawanda Planning Board discussed whether the two largest neighboring towns in Erie County may want to work together to adopt similar codes.
The Town of Tonawanda imposed a moratorium in March as it hammers out a new code to deal with rapidly changing technology. The town board said in March that cellphone providers were already coming to Tonawanda to aim their towers at Amherst.
Planning Board Chairman Kenneth Swanekamp asked his board on Wednesday if it should consider extending its moratorium to match Amherst so that both codes mesh. He said he would discuss the issue with Amherst before the board's next meeting.
"Technology seems to be changing by the week," said Swanekamp.
