Amherst looking to create loop trail around UB

The state Department of Transportation has offered to donate a 2.9-acre parcel of land on Millersport Highway to the Town of Amherst. The town would use the land for a planned trail that would complete a loop around the University at Buffalo.

The vacant land at 1320 Millersport is between the Buffalo Marriott Niagara and Youngmann Expressway. The town's Bicentennial Comprehensive Plan calls for creating the "University West" trail along the old Lehigh rail line, which would connect with the Ellicott Creek Trailway.

An environmental study in April found indications of a possible debris pile and remnants of concrete slabs and asphalt, said Building Commissioner Brian P. Andrzejewski. Before accepting the donation, Andrzejewski has recommended a more in-depth environmental study.

"We just want to determine the environmental quality of that pile to make sure there's no contamination present," said Eric W. Gillert, the town's planning director.
