True Bethel Baptist Church is moving along with its expansion plans to turn six vacant lots into three single-family homes at its East Ferry Street campus.
On Tuesday, the Common Council's legislation committee approved the sale of four city-owned lots to the church's development arm – True Community Development Corp. – to make way for the construction of the single-family homes.
The properties to be developed are all located on East Ferry Street. They include 825, 831, 845 and 847, which are the city-owned lots, as well as 833 and 837, which are owned by the church.
The single-family homes will complete a series of projects for the church's larger community campus, which includes a 30-unit townhome project, a 50-unit senior housing facility, a Head Start program, a Dollar General store and three previously built homes around the corner on Woodlawn Avenue. It also converted a former firehouse into offices for its community outreach arm.
The sale of the city-owned lots still has to go before the Common Council for approval.
