Dalton Pompey strolled into the Buffalo Bisons clubhouse Saturday afternoon. The move hasn't been made official by the Toronto Blue Jays, but he's in Buffalo ready to continue his rehab assignment in Triple-A.
Pompey suffered a concussion while playing for Team Canada at the World Baseball Classic in March. He missed spring training and the beginning of the season, getting his first game action last week playing four games with Single-A Dunedin.
He is expected to play nine innings in the outfield for the Bisons on Sunday.
Back in the Bisons lineup for Saturday night's game is Dwight Smith Jr. He missed two games after crashing into the right field wall on Wednesday trying to make a catch.
The other pregame note: The Charlotte Knights will start James Shields, on the Chicago White Sox 10-day disabled list with a right lat strain. The 35-year-old begins his MLB rehab assignments with Saturday's start. He went 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA in three starts with the White Sox this season. It's his first minor league start since he made 10 starts for the Durham Bulls in 2006.
Shields is the fourth player on Major League rehab to play in Buffalo on Star Wars Night joining Jamie Moyer, a visitor with Norfolk in 2012 while Jose Reyes (2013) and Jose Bautista (2016) were with the Bisons on a rehab assignment, complete with wearing Star Wars themed jerseys.
