Evelyn S. Cole, 94, retired elementary school teacher

Evelyn S. Cole, of Amherst, a retired elementary school teacher, died Sunday in Beechwood Nursing Home, Getzville. She was 94.

Born in Syracuse, the former Evelyn Smith grew up in Raymondville, near Massena, and was a 1943 graduate of Potsdam State Teachers College.

Mrs. Cole began her teaching career in Carthage, then taught third grade at Jefferson Elementary School in Massena from its opening in 1954 until she retired in 1983. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor society of women educators.

An avid golfer, she was a former member of the Massena Country Club. She also was a member of the Cretona Chapter 516, Order of the Eastern Star, in Massena.

She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Massena and in recent years attended Christ United Methodist Church in Amherst, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Circle. She enjoyed playing bridge with friends at the Amherst Senior Center.

She moved to Amherst after the death of her husband of 56 years, Lyle L., in 1999, to be closer to her daughter, Anne, and her family.

In addition to her daughter, survivors include two grandchildren, a niece and nephews.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. May 30 in Christ United Methodist Church, 350 Saratoga Road, Amherst.
