Niagara County Community College will face Tyler (Texas) tonight in the championship round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III baseball World Series at Pioneer Park in Greenville, Tenn.
Tyler (3-0), the only remaining undefeated team in the tournament, sat out Tuesday while NCCC (4-1) was eliminating Century (Minn.) and Cumberland County (Tenn.) to advance to the championship round. NCCC will need to defeat Tyler tonight and again Thursday night to claim the championship.
The Thunderwolves scored five times in the seventh inning to defeat Century, 10-5. Matt Cross (Starpoint) had a two-run double in the big inning. Cross was 5 for 9 in the two games. Julian Placencia homered for NCCC.
A big inning, five runs in the sixth, carried NCCC to its win over Cumberland. Christian Young (Frontier) pitched three innings in relief with five strikeouts to get the win for coach Matt Clingersmith’s team. Jason Brnik was 3 for 4 with two doubles for NCCC.
Tyler (40-20) handed NCCC (47-9) its only loss in the tournament, 4-1, on Sunday.
