Two women plead guilty for roles in restaurant owner's death

Two women have pleaded guilty for their roles in a robbery last summer that left an East Side restaurant owner dead.

Shanita Chapman, 30, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery in the first degree for going into the home of Upendra Bawa, 78, last July 17 with the intent of robbing the man. Bawa ran the Taste of Life restaurant on Sycamore Street for more than 20 years and lived upstairs from the business.

Dalene T. McIlwain, 17, previously pleaded guilty to robbery in the first degree.

In exchange for the pleas, the women agreed to cooperate in the case against Jamell Chapman, Shanita Chapman’s brother, whom prosecutors believe inflicted the fatal beating.

Jamell Chapman, 26, is being held on a charge of second degree murder.
