Olean man pleads guilty to setting Bailey Avenue apartment fire

Roger Cornell, 63, of Olean, pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court Tuesday to arson in the second degree for setting fire to a Bailey Avenue apartment building on Jan. 21.

Investigators said Cornell used an incendiary device to start the fire in the large wood-frame building at 437 Bailey Ave. The two-and-a-half story, 10-unit structure housed about 20 people. No tenants were injured but officials said the fire killed two cats. Damage was estimated at $275,000.

Justice Russell P. Buscaglia set sentencing for July 24.
