Workforce Development Center gets $5 million in tax breaks

Plans for the Western New York Workforce Development Center received a boost in the form of $5 million in tax breaks approved by the Erie County Industrial Development Agency on Wednesday.

The $58 million project on Northland Avenue – part of the Buffalo Billion – will convert vacant space into a worker training facility and a small business center where Buffalo Manufacturing Works is a prospective tenant.

In a letter endorsing the incentives, Mayor Byron W. Brown called the East Side project "a critical anchor to the redevelopment of this entire neighborhood and an opportunity to bring job training and new jobs to a community that is very much in need of economic development." Brown said the ECIDA incentives were a necessary part of the financial puzzle, given the site's size, historic significance and "years of neglect."
