A grand jury has indicted a Marilla teenager on charges of murder by depraved indifference and manslaughter in the beating death of a toddler in March.

Devon M. Vanderwege, 17, is scheduled to be arraigned in Erie County Court on Wednesday.

On March 10, a 911 call alerted authorities about a child not breathing at 2039 Hemstreet Road in Marilla. Police and rescue personnel responded and found 2-year-old Ethan Bigham unconscious and with severe head trauma. They performed CPR and Ethan was later put on life support at Women & Children’s Hospital. He died four days later.

Ethan lived in the mobile home with his mother, three siblings and four other adults, according to investigators. Vanderwege was one of two adults in the home at the time of the 911 call. The other adult in the home at the time was Ian Hart, 20, who is father of Ethan’s 9-month-old sibling. Ethan’s mother, Heather Schoepflin, 26, reportedly was at work and her other two children, ages 6 and 10, were in school.
