Domestic violence agency wants to open office on Grand Island

The Family Justice Center of Erie County, which provides free domestic violence support to women and their children, is hoping to open a third FJC satellite location that would serve the Grand Island and neighbors to the north.

FJC Executive Director Mary Travers Murphy and a Grand Island team will hold a community meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Buffalo Launch Club, 503 East River Road, Grand Island, for people to learn more and get involved.

Murphy said a potential free space for a satellite location has been identified. She said the FJC has secured a grant to move forward.

Grand Island leads Erie County with the most reported domestic violence cases, according to local and county police reports, Grand Island volunteer Kelly Petrie said.

"It's not a statistic we are proud of, but maybe it's one we can change," said Petrie.
