Lawrence E. Smith of Niagara Falls racked up his third felony conviction in six years when he pleaded guilty to possessing an illegal handgun.
Smith, 28, of Orleans Avenue had a loaded revolver when Falls police stopped him for a parole violation at the Coastal gas station on 19th Street on Nov. 28. He pleaded guilty Thursday to a reduced charge of attempted second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Smith is to be sentenced to three years in prison for the gun charge when he returns before Niagara County Judge Matthew J. Murphy III on July 14. However, Assistant Public Defender Michele G. Bergevin said that sentence won't start until Smith completes 22 months for violating parole on his last conviction, a 2015 drug possession felony. Smith also has a felony drug conviction from 2011.
