Inquiring minds want to know: Who is going to replace WGRZ-TV (Channel 2) anchor Scott Levin, whose final broadcast is 6 p.m. Wednesday?
Channel 2 sports director Adam Benigni, who has co-anchored the 5:30 p.m. newscast during the May sweeps and subbed for Levin Thursday when the veteran anchor was out sick, has been told that he would be taking Levin's place temporarily until a final decision is made.
Benigni said he has been told that he will co-anchor the 11 p.m. newscast next Wednesday after Levin's 6 p.m. finale and fill-in alongside co-anchor Maryalice Demler after that until Channel 2 makes a final decision.
Jonah Javad, Stu Boyar and Heather Prusak will handle the sports duties while Benigni co-anchors the news.
Benigni is not believed to be the only candidate. Anchor-reporter Pete Gallivan, who frequently fills in for John Beard on "Daybreak," and two anchors from outside the station are believed to be in the running for Levin's position. The station is likely to test each of them alongside Demler, if they haven't been tested already.
Benigni confirmed that he remains interested in becoming Levin's permanent replacement if General Manager Jim Toellner and News Director Kate Glover make that call.
"If they are interested, I'm interested in talking about it," said Benigni Thursday. "That hasn't changed."
Meanwhile, veteran Channel 2 executive news producer Matt Pitts has given his notice and is leaving the station. Pitts, who is married to Channel 2 anchor Kelly Dudzik, is leaving to be the communications manager for the Western New York region of Key Bank.
Finally, Channel 2 wants its viewers to know that "Meet the Press" won't air this Sunday after a busy news week and that it isn't its decision. NBC isn't producing an episode this weekend. Channel 2 plays to carry an hour of "Daybreak" at 9 a.m., the time that "MTP" normally airs.
