Canisius walks off a winner; UB wraps it up Saturday

Canisius always enjoys defeating its biggest rival, Niagara, in the regular season, and it did exactly that on Friday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. Just to make it sweeter, it was a walk-off win.

Cyrus Senior scratched out an infield single in the bottom of the 13th inning with the bases loaded. That plated Liam Wilson, who had hit a one-out triple, with the winning run in a 7-6 game.

Canisius finished the regular season with a 34-20 overall record and a 16-8 ledger in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Golden Griffins finished in a tie for second in the league standings, one game behind champion Fairfield.

Canisius now awaits its final seeding for the upcoming MAAC tournament (hosted by Niagara) as they are slated to play the noon contest on Wednesday, May 24 in the first round with its opponent to be determined. Niagara must wait until today to find out if it will qualify for the tournament.

UB going down to wire

The University at Buffalo baseball game against Western Michigan was rained out in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Friday. The teams will try again to play a doubleheader today.

UB could play its way into the MAC Tournament -- or it could play its final games in program history

The Bulls (17-32) are 8-14 in the Mid-American Conference, which has them in ninth place among the 11 MAC baseball teams; the top eight advance to next week's MAC Tournament.

The top seven teams are set. The current No. 8 team is Bowling Green, which has completed its season at 9-15. If UB sweeps Western, it would earn a tournament bid.

UB has announced it will drop the sport after this season.
