The Prep Talk Female Athlete of the Week is Christy Mack of Williamsville East. (James P. McCoy/Buffalo News)

It's said in baseball and softball that it's a good idea to have one of your best athletes play shortstop. Christy Mack of Williamsville East deserves that description.

Mack, a sophomore, went 10 for 15 last week with three homers, two doubles, seven runs scored and 11 RBIs. She's hitting .550, and has made only one error this season.

That's sounds like someone who should be the Prep Talk Female Athlete of the Week.

Coach Chris Durr on Christy: "She joined the varsity softball team four years ago as a seventh grader. Since that time she has been one of most consistent players in the field and at the plate. She has a career batting average of .460 and a fielding percentage above .900. Christy is a very coachable player who is always looking for ways to improve."

How has your season gone so far? It's been a great season so far. We won the ECIC Division title. We are 13-3 overall and 10-2 in the division. And I'm looking forward to playoffs and hopefully going all the way to states.

Highlight of athletic career so far: As a freshman I was nominated for the All-State second team and also All-Western New York.

Favorite thing about my sport: I love being able to form relationships with my teammates, and I love being out on the field playing shortstop. I get to cover a lot of range and there is a ton of action.

Favorite teammate and why: It's Veronica Zimmerman. I know I can count on her to always be positive on and off the field, and she makes playing the game more enjoyable every day.

Toughest opponent and why: West Seneca East. They have a strong team and always give us tough competition.

Local athlete I looked up to and why: I looked up to my older brother Charles, because he's a role model and extremely dedicated to his sport of baseball.

Pro/college athlete I admire now and why: Derek Jeter, because he's done everything the right way.

When I'm not playing or practicing my sport, I'm: Spending time with my friends and family.

What's ahead: Hopefully I'll continue to play softball throughout my college career.
