PUSH Buffalo broke ground Tuesday on a project at the former Buffalo Public School 77 to turn it into affordable senior housing and community space.
The vacant school building at 429 Plymouth Ave. on the city's West side also will be the new homes of PUSH Buffalo and the Ujima Theatre Company.
PUSH, which stands for People United for Sustainable Housing, worked with members of the community to develop ideas on what to do with the space. The $15 million plan includes 30 affordable senior housing units and a refurbished community gym.
"We're very excited, because the transformation which was engaged, really, with the residents over a two-year period, deep engagement from them," said Rahwa Ghirmatzion, deputy director PUSH Buffalo.
The building also will have energy efficient and green features, PUSH officials said.
