A section of Southwestern Boulevard in Hamburg has been changed from a four-lane highway to three lanes with a center turning lane.
The $100,000 re-striping of the road, also called Route 20, between Lakeview and Amsdell roads is aimed at improving traffic safety by providing a dedicated lane for left turns.
State Assemblyman Sean Ryan, D-Buffalo, asked the state to conduct a traffic study after residents complained about a number of serious accidents, including several fatalities, in that area. The study found a higher than expected number of accidents, and rear-end accidents were the most frequent type of accident. The state Department of Transportation decided to re-stripe the road.
The state plans to evaluate the new configuration to help determine the final lane configuration that will be included in a $1.1 million repaving of the road, which is scheduled for 2018.
