Bisons walk off with loss after 12th inning Ironpigs' homer

Dylan Cozens’ second home run of the game proved to be the difference on Friday night, as his walk-off blast gave Lehigh Valley a 5-4 win over the Buffalo Bisons in 12 innings in Allentown, Pa.

The homer came off Bisons reliever Chad Girodo (0-1), and was Cozens’ eighth of the season. Cesar Ramos (2-1) was credited with the win.

It was a painful loss for the Bisons. They had one-run leads entering the bottom of the eighth and bottom of the ninth, and failed to hold them each time.

Fast start: The Bisons didn’t waste too much time getting on the scoreboard, as they put up three runs in the second inning.

Jason Leblebijian opened the inning with a single to center, and moved to second on a passed ball. He advanced to third on a ground out, and then scored on a roller from Alex Monsalve. But Buffalo wasn’t done yet. Shane Opitz hit a line drive to center to keep the inning alive, and Jonathan Diaz walked. Roemon Fields then drove in two runs with a hit.

Fighting back: Cozens got Lehigh Valley a run with a leadoff homer in the second inning. In the seventh, Pedro Florimon’s double plated Taylor Featherston. Jesmuel Valentin tied the game with a single in the bottom of the eighth.

Back and forth: In the top of the ninth, Christian Lopes drew a walk with the bases loaded that put the Bisons ahead, 4-3. But Cozens got that run back with a single that scored Cameron Perkins. Couzens went 3 for 6 on the night, raising the cleanup hitter’s average to .221.

Roster move: The Bisons activated catcher Alex Monsalve from the disabled list on Friday.

In the house: A crowd of 9,122 attended the game at Coca-Cola Park.

Next up: Buffalo’s series with the IronPigs continues tonight (6:35 p.m., Radio 1520 AM). Mat Latos will throw for the Herd, while righty Thomas Eshelman (1-0) will pitch for Lehigh Valley.
