Letter: A new convention center was needed decades ago

A new convention center was needed decades ago

Well over 20 years ago, near the end of County Executive Dennis Gorski’s administration, a study was completed stating our convention center was too small and not competitive. A new center was to be built at the site of the Mohawk Parking Ramp.

Today, after years of delays, we are still waiting for the results of a new study to reconfirm what meeting planner Michelle Smith and many other meeting planners have said: Cross Buffalo off the list of possible meeting locations!

The millions we spent over the last decades were like trying to upgrade an old vehicle. How sad. The News’ graph illustrates that our peer cities found the money for such a high-priority community development.

Sadder yet are the millions of outside revenue and sales taxes we residents and business owners have lost forever, each year for decades, because of the conventioneers who did not come and instead spent their money elsewhere.

We are fortunate that the Pegulas, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Buffalo Billion, and federal historic tax credits came to the Buffalo area, otherwise we may have gone over Niagara Falls!
