Prep Talk Male Athlete of the Week: Jake Cotter, Medina lacrosse

Jake Cotter did the equivalent of grabbing an eraser last week, and wiping out the name of Kyle Barna from the Medina record book – at least on one page.

Cotter became the all-time goal-scoring leader in boys lacrosse at Medina when he scored his 182nd goal in his great career. Cotter passed Barna; the two played together three years ago when Barna was a senior and Cotter was a freshman.

Cotter's big achievement led to his selection as the Prep Talk Male Athlete of the Week.

Name: Jake Cotter

Team: Medina Mustangs

Year: Senior

Position: Midfield

Uniform number: 3

Twitter: @Jakey358

Coach Gordy Luthart on Jake: "Jake's statistics and accomplishments speak for themselves. I have had the privilege of working with Jake since he was in seventh grade. I would like to commend his parents, David and Mo, for raising such a great young man. It has truly been an honor to be his coach."

Tell us about your week: Last week I was able to break the school record for goals in a career with 183.  This week I am looking forward to big games vs Akron and Eden.

How has your season gone so far? Team record is 9-3.  I have 53 goals and 51 ground balls so far.

Highlight of athletic career so far: Being recruited by Canisius and accepting a scholarship for lacrosse.

Favorite thing about my sport: Nonstop action.

Favorite teammate and why: Mason Lewis because he is an animal and can do everything.

Toughest opponent and why: Akron because of its amazing stick skills.

WNY athlete I looked up to and why: Former teammate Kyle Barna because of his physicality.

Pro/college athlete I admire now and why: Rob Panell (New York Lizards of Major League Lacrosse and Team USA), because of his quickness and we are both No. 3.

Favorite school subject: Science.

What’s ahead (athletics and/or academics): I’ll be studying business at Canisius and playing lacrosse.
