Prep Talk Female Athlete of the Week: Molly Meegan, Mount St. Mary lacrosse

Molly Meegan of Mount St. Mary Academy has a new souvenir.

It's the lacrosse ball with which she scored the 100th goal of her career, and it's signed by all her teammates. Even better is that fact that the milestone goal came in a victory over Sacred Heart, and was part of a perfect week with a couple of other wins.

That's a very good week ... for the Prep Talk Female Athlete of the Week.

Name: Molly Meegan

School: Mount St. Mary Thunder

Year: Senior

Position: Midfield

Uniform number: 9

Coach Mackenzie Berger on Molly: "From the very first day at tryouts, I knew Molly would be a huge asset to our team. She is a complete team player, as are the rest of the girls on the team, and that is one of our biggest advantages. Molly has an attitude that can influence everyone on the team. She pushes her teammates and encourages them to be the best they can be."

Tell us about your week: I scored my 100th goal on Saturday, May 6th against Sacred Heart in a game that Mount won, 8-5 (our defense played a great a game for us and won the game for us). We also beat Mount Mercy, 11-4, on May 2 and Nardin, 15-0, on May 3 (Sam Miller had an amazing game and had a shutout).

How has your season gone so far? I think the season is going well (7-4 as of the start of the week). Having a new coach was tough at first but has brought us closer together and I think our coaches are great. Our team trip to Long Island helped us a lot to realize how good we could be and the Long Island teams' strength showed us how good our team is. I credit a lot of this season's success to our defense, led by our junior goaltender Sam Miller.

Highlight of athletic career so far: My senior year has been highlighted with signing my NLI on November 16 to continue my lacrosse career at Mercyhurst University. The lacrosse season has been highlighted with beating Sacred Heart on Saturday May  6 and also getting my 100th goal. In the winter, my basketball highlights were when our team beat Sacred Heart for the first time in school history. Highlights also include being named Second Team All-Catholic for basketball and getting great support from my teams, my basketball and lacrosse coaches, and most importantly my family, I would not be able to do it without them.

Favorite thing about my sport: I love the team and how close the bond we have is. I love how it is aggressive and it is just a fun sport to play.

Favorite teammate and why: Sam Miller, she is our goalie and she is my favorite teammate because she works so hard and she always has a positive attitude.

Toughest opponent and why: Sacred Heart – they are a skilled team and they have a great defense.

WNY athlete I looked up to and why: Kelly Burns – she is a hard working athlete all around and she always pushes herself and spends most of her time at the gym or in the pool or on the court.

Pro/college athlete I admire now and why: Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers) – he is a great team player and he always talks about his team and isn't selfish. He's an all-around, great hard-working player on the court.

Favorite school subject: English is my favorite subject because I enjoy expressing myself in writing and my teacher Ms. Andelora make the class fun and creates an inspiring atmosphere.

What’s ahead (athletics and/or academics): I will be attending Mercyhurst University and I will be playing on the Women's Lacrosse team (D-II).
