Teen charged with arson after fire at Erie County park shelter

A 15-year-old faces an arson charge after a fire at a warming shelter at the Erie County Bureau of Forestry on Genesee Road in Sardinia on Monday night, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Authorities reported little damage to the structure, though a picnic table was heavily damaged and a plastic garbage can was melted, the Sheriff's Office said. The fire, which happened at about 7:40 p.m., was put out by Sardinia firefighters.

A sheriff's deputy located a 15-year-old who was determined to have started the fire. The teen was charged with two misdemeanors – criminal mischief and arson, the Sheriff's Office said. The teen was issued appearance tickets for Erie County Family Court and released to a guardian.
