Rev. Elton J. Rengstorf, Lutheran pastor, former Camp Pioneer director

July 16, 1930 - April 6, 2017

The Rev. Elton J. Rengstorf, of Lewiston, died April 6 in Niagara Hospice in Lockport. He was 86.

Born in Marysville, Kansas, he graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and was ordained in 1956.

He served as a missionary to the Philippines for 13 years, and was president of the Lutheran Church in the Philippines from 1964 to 1968.

Rev. Rengstorf served as the director of Camp Pioneer in Angola, and held the position of executive director of the eastern district of the Lutheran Layman's League from 1969 to 1981.

He served as pastor of St. Andrew Lutheran Church from 1981 to 1983, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Colden from 1983 to 1994, and Escarpment Lutheran Church in Lewiston from 1998 to 2003.

He also was mission executive of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Eastern District from 1991 to 1998.

His first wife, Marion Dallman, predeceased him.

He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Bridges; four daughters, Ruth Thielo, Laura Krug, Jean and Joyce Tunnard; two step-sons, Mark and Michael Bridges; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held on May 20 at 11 a.m. in The Lutheran Church of The Messiah Church, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston.
