Coast Guard searching Niagara River for man seen yelling for help

The Coast Guard is searching the Niagara River between Buffalo and Youngstown on Monday morning after a man was seen in the water calling for help.

An employee at the Buffalo Sewer Authority plant reported hearing the man yelling in the water just north of the international railroad bridge toward the northern end of Unity Island, the Coast Guard said.

Several people who saw the man in the water tried to follow him as he was carried downstream. The man in the water was described as white, between 30 and 40 years old with dark hair and wearing a dark-colored shirt. The initial sighting of the man happened sometime around 3 or 4 a.m., authorities said.

The initial search involved Buffalo police, a boat from the Buffalo Fire Department and a small boat from the Coast Guard. A Coast Guard helicopter is searching the river between Youngstown and Buffalo.

Anyone who spots the man should call the Coast Guard at 843-9525.
