The start of summer at Helium Comedy Club means a boost in local laughs, as the downtown venue has announced the return of its “Buffalo’s Funniest Person” contest. Contest applications are now being accepted for the competition set to begin May 30.
For professional or amateur comedians, winning the contest can boost a person's career. In addition to taking home a prize of $1,200, the comic may see additional bookings at Helium and clubs outside of Buffalo. Past winners include Josh Potter, Rick Matthews, Brian Herberger and Kevin Thomas Jr.
In order to participate, applicants must reside in the Buffalo metro area. Contestants must perform four and a half to six minutes of original material during the first round, six and a half to eight minutes in the semi-final, and eight and a half to 10 minutes in the finals. Comedians advance in the three-round competition through audience voting. A group of judges help decide the finals of the contest.
Registration for the contest is $20 and can be completed at buffalo.heliumcomedy.com. Deadline is May 12. All slots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
