Democrats pick Baskin to succeed Grant in County Legislature

Democrats in the Erie County Legislature’s District 2 have endorsed April Baskin to succeed mayoral candidate Betty Jean Grant.

Party officials chose her Wednesday night from among four original candidates including former Council Member-at-Large Charley H. Fisher III; Duncan Kirkwood, Western New York advocacy manager for the Northeast Charter Schools Network; and James Blackwell, son of former Legislature Chairman Roger I. Blackwell.

Blackwell has since withdrawn, while Fisher has announced he will compete in the Democratic Primary.

Baskin is a graduate student at SUNY Buffalo State who in 2014 founded College Simulation, an educational initiative seeking to improve college retention rates for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

She is a graduate of Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts with a bachelor's degree in theater arts from SUNY Empire State College.
