Softball 2017 Quick Hits: What you need to know

Orchard Park lost in state Class AA final; Depew lost in state Class B semifinal; Nardin lost in state Catholic final.

2016 All-WNY underclassmen: P Karsen Cotton-11 (Depew), C Abby Stone-10 (Akron), P Hannah Cybart-11 (Fredonia), P Anilese Kelly-10 (West Seneca East), SS Kara Paradowski-11 (Lancaster), 1B Madison Stewart-10 (Orchard Park), INF Madison Klidonas-10 (Niagara Wheatfield), C Jenna Rhue-10 (Lewiston-Porter), SS Christy Mack-9 (Williamsville East), C Heather Haberman-11 (Hamburg).

Going the distance: Section VI experienced a nice run of success in the state tournament in recent years, as at least one team won a championship from 2012-15. Orchard Park, the 2015 champ in Class AA, came close to extending the streak last year, but fell to IV-Binghamton in the final, 4-1. The other teams that won championships during that run include Clarence (Class AA, 2012), Hamburg (Class A, 2013), Frewsburg (Class C, 2013), Williamsville South (Class A, 2014) and Eden (Class B, 2014).

Odd stat: Proof that winning state championships isn't easy and sometimes requires good fortune mixed in with solid team play: No Section VI Class D champion has ever won a state title, according to the NYSPHSAA.org website's records, which go as far back as 1985.

Conversely, Section VI has crowned a champion four times in the state's largest classification (Class A from 1985-03; AA 2004-present).

More state stats: Only 11 Section VI programs have ever won a state title with Williamsville South capturing four of them. The others: Orchard Park, Clarence, Kenmore West, North Tonawanda, Eden, Hamburg, Falconer, Frewsburg, Salamanca and Wilson.

Key dates: Section VI seeding meeting, May 15; Section VI finals (Classes A-1, A-2, B-1, B-2, C-1, C-2) May 25; Section VI finals (Classes AA, A, B, C, D) May 30; Far West Regionals, June 2 (Classes AA, A and B at Brockport) and June 3 (Classes C and D at Promenschenkel Stadium in Dunkirk); state final four at Moreau Park in Glens Falls, June 10; Monsignor Martin final at Sunshine Park, May 24; state Catholic final four at TBA, May 30.

The Prep Talk Athlete of the Year for softball favorites: Last year's winner Paradowski, Cotton, Stone, Kelly, Stewart, Cybart, Rhue, Haberman, Mack and Klidonas.
