Sheriff's deputy honored for saving driver from burning vehicle

A Niagara County sheriff's deputy who helped save a man by pulling him from a wreck in Pendleton in November was recognized over the weekend.

Deputy Nicholas Walter received the Honorable Wesley Arnold Memorial Lawman of the Year Award from the Judges & Police Executives Conference of Niagara County at its annual dinner Saturday in Niagara Falls.

Walter and two neighbors pulled the driver from a burning vehicle the morning of Nov. 11 on Beach Ridge Road. The driver, who had struck a tree, was trapped inside with his legs pinned by the vehicle's engine, which was pushed into the passenger cabin by the force of the crash. Immediately after the driver was pulled out, the flames inside the vehicle spread throughout the vehicle's interior.

Walter and the two neighbors saved the man's life, the organization said.

"Deputy Walter saved a life without hesitation or thought for his own wellbeing. He is truly worthy of this recognition for his actions," Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour said in a statement.
