Timeline: Doug Whaley's tenure defined by some hits, bigger misses

From the moment Doug Whaley was hired by the Buffalo Bills as an assistant general manager in 2010, it was clear that the team had bigger plans for him. Whaley was 37 at the time, while General Manager Buddy Nix was 70.

Whaley, who arrived in Buffalo after 11 years as the Pittsburgh Steelers' pro scouting coordinator, was hired to be the future of the Bills' front office. Here is a look at a timeline of the major personnel moves Whaley and/or the team made during or shortly before his time as general manager, which ended Sunday morning when he was fired by owners Terry and Kim Pegula.

• Jan. 7, 2013: Doug Marrone hired as head coach.

• Feb. 23, 2013: Whaley, still an assistant general manager, signs a contract extension, all but officially making him the successor to Nix.

• March 12, 2013: Released former starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

• April 25-27, 2013: Quarterback EJ Manuel is the Bills' first-round draft pick after the team trades down. In the second round, Buffalo adds wide receiver Robert Woods and linebacker Kiko Alonso. None of the players selected in this draft remain on the Bills' roster.

• April 30, 2013: Linebacker Kelvin Sheppard traded to Indianapolis for defensive end Jerry Hughes. Cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman announced as one of the Bills' undrafted free agents.

• May 13, 2013: Buddy Nix steps down as GM.

• May 16, 2013: Whaley officially takes over as GM.

• April 3, 2014: Mary Wilson takes over as controlling owner after the death of her husband, founding owner Ralph Wilson.

• May 8-10, 2014: Whaley trades the Bills' 2015 first- and fourth-round draft picks to Cleveland to draft Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins in the first round of the NFL Draft. Offensive lineman Cyrus Kouandjio is chosen in the second round. Linebacker Preston Brown (third round) and offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson (seventh round) also picked.

• Aug. 24, 2014: Released defensive tackle Alan Branch after signing him to a contract extension in December 2013.

• Aug. 30, 2014: Signed quarterback Kyle Orton.

• Dec. 31, 2014: Doug Marrone quits as head coach.

• Jan. 12, 2015: Rex Ryan hired as head coach.

•  Jan. 13, 2015: Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has contract terminated.

• Feb. 9, 2015: Signed guard Richie Incognito.

• March 10, 2015: Traded Alonso to Philadelphia for running back LeSean McCoy. Also acquired quarterback Matt Cassel from Minnesota for draft picks.

• March 12, 2015: Signed quarterback Tyrod Taylor to a two-year contract.

• March 19, 2015: Signed tight end Charles Clay to a five-year contract after the Miami Dolphins failed to match the Bills' offer.

• April 30-May 2, 2015: Without a first-round draft pick, Bills pick Florida State cornerback Ronald Darby in the second round of the NFL Draft. Guard John Miller (third round), tight end Nick O'Leary (sixth round) and wide receiver Dez Lewis (seventh round) remain on the roster from the class.

• Sept. 10, 2015: Signed defensive tackle Marcell Dareus to a six-year contract extension.

• Jan. 10, 2016: Whaley signs three-year contract extension. Team hires Rob Ryan as assistant head coach/defense.

• March 1, 2016: Designated left tackle Cordy Glenn as the franchise player and released defensive end Mario Williams in a move designed to free up space under the salary cap.

• April 4, 2016: Signed linebacker Zach Brown.

• April 13, 2016: Signed linebacker Lorenzo Alexander.

• April 28-30, 2016: Bills draft Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson, Alabama linebacker Reggie Ragland and Ohio State defensive tackle Adolphus Washington in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft.

• May 4, 2016: Signed left tackle Cordy Glenn to a contract extension.

• Aug. 12, 2016: Signed quarterback Tyrod Taylor to a contract extension.

• Dec. 27, 2016: Fired coach Rex Ryan. Promoted Anthony Lynn to interim head coach.

• Jan. 11, 2017: Named Sean McDermott head coach.

• March 8, 2017: Signed quarterback Tyrod Taylor to a reworked contract.

• March 10, 2017: Released safety Aaron Williams. Signed safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer.

• April 27-29, 2017: Bills trade down in the first round and draft LSU cornerback Tre'Davious White in the first round of the NFL Draft. Team also trades up into the second round twice to draft East Carolina wide receiver Zay Jones and Temple right tackle Dion Dawkins.

• April 30, 2017: Fired by Buffalo Bills as general manager.
