Automation has caused the demise of many jobs
Douglas Turner’s recent column, “Trump quickly betrays blue-collar Americans,” does contain some valuable observations, but he omitted one very important thing.
While offshoring has certainly caused some job loss in the U.S., automation – in manufacturing and in other market sectors – is also a major cause of the loss of middle-class jobs. Should manufacturing work that has moved elsewhere return, all of the jobs will not come along because many of them have evaporated.
The president, the executive branch in general and Congress seem to be unaware of what is happening; so does Turner.
