Letter: Keep your children off of riding lawn mowers

Keep your children off of riding lawn mowers

We have had public service announcements regarding bike helmets and, more recently, warnings involving opioid abuse. And now I feel obligated to speak out on the subject of child safety during lawn mowing season. Taking your child for a ride on the riding mower seems to be a harmless, fun thing to do. You will hold on to him tightly, and he will be so thrilled to buzz around the yard while you cut the grass. And you’re thinking what harm could it do?

A parent’s responsibilities start by teaching your children the difference between right and wrong. The lawn mower is not a toy. There are motorized toys you can buy. Parents should be good role models for their children. You are to protect them from the remote chance of any harm. Please don’t think it won’t happen to you. As a nurse in the operating room at Children’s Hospital, it breaks my heart every time we have to mend these mangled limbs. Please don’t think it can’t happen to you.
