Coast Guard rescues 2 people from small vessels headed toward Falls

The Coast Guard rescued two people from two small vessels Monday that were adrift on the Niagara River, headed toward Niagara Falls.

A spokesman for the Coast Guard said the Buffalo Station received a call about 7:30 p.m. from a man on Cayuga Island who spotted the vessels, a jet ski and a small aluminum boat that was about 14 feet in length.

Both were disabled in the middle of the river and drifting toward the American Falls past the north Grand Island bridge, he said.

The jet ski operator came upon the disabled boat and tried to help, but then became disabled itself, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard contacted the Erie County Sheriff's Department, which launched its rescue helicopter.

The Coast Guard was able to reach both vessels, and towed them to shore at LaSalle Park in Niagara Falls.

'I really thought I was gone,' said man who jumped in river to save dog
