Annual volunteer firefighter recruitment drive on tap for next weekend

Erie County's volunteer fire companies are enlisting in RecruitNY, a statewide effort Saturday and next Sunday to step up the recruitment of volunteer firefighters.

Michael Loughran, a spokesman for the Fireman's Association of New York State, said volunteer fire departments will be open next weekend for the recruiting effort, with members on hand to explain what it takes to become a volunteer firefighter and the importance of the job.

Ken Pienkowski, president of the state organization, who is from Onondaga County, will join local volunteer firefighters and Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz in a news conference at 11 a.m. Monday at Doyle Hose Company 1, 2199 William St., Cheektowaga, to announce the effort.
