What to watch for Thursday
1. Baseball - Williamsville North at Lancaster, 4:45 p.m. (POSTPONED)
These two ECIC I and Class AA powers meet for the second time already this season when Lancaster (1-1, 0-1) hosts Williamsville North (2-0, 1-0) this afternoon.
The Spartans took round one at home, 3-2, on a walk-off single by Josh Surowiec. Dave Harwell earned the win on the mound. North's other victory came against rival Williamsville East, also 3-2.
The Legends lucked out with yesterday's rainout, as they won't have to play four games in four days. Lancaster instead plays North today and then visits Orchard Park and West Seneca West over the next two days.. Either way, its pitching depth will be tested.
2. Girls lacrosse - West Seneca West at West Seneca East, 7:30 p.m.
Undefeated crosstown rivals West Seneca East (3-0) and West Seneca West (2-0) square off under the lights on Thursday.
The Trojans have averaged 12 goals per game in their wins over Hamburg, Niagara Wheatfield and Iroquois. Senior Grace Vogel leads the team with 15 goals. Classmate Laura Skrzypczyk has 10.
The Indians have dominating wins over Eden and Lew-Port so far. Five players have at least three goals for West. Senior Paige Cocina has a team-high six goals.
3. Boys lacrosse - Akron at Medina, 5 p.m.
Akron (4-1) plays for the second time in as many days when it visits Class D foe Medina (4-1) today.
The Tigers picked up a 19-10 league win over Gowanda yesterday. Returning All-Western New Yorker Owen Hill had five goals and two assists, while Keenan Minham scored three times and had five assists.
The Mustangs won four in a row to start the season before losing on Tuesday to unbeaten Eden, 13-7. Jake Cotter, who leads the team in goals with 23, scored twice. Brendan Luthart scored three times and now has 20 goals on the season.
4. Softball - Lockport at Newfane, 4:30 p.m. (POSTPONED)
Newfane (2-1) hosts fellow Niagara County school Lockport (1-0) in the top softball game of the day.
The Panthers won their first two games of the season against Niagara-Orleans competition in Albion and Wilson, then lost to Alden last Friday. Senior Olivia Littman had five hits, including a double and a home run, and nine RBIs in the first two games.
The Lions scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn a 7-4 deficit into an 8-7 lead and win against North Tonawanda on April 3. Sam Gelnett went 2-3 with a double and three RBIs in the game. Kathryn Krchniak struck out nine batters and gave up four earned runs in earning the win.
