Teen fashion retailer Rue21 will close 400 stores across the country, including four in Western New York.
The affected locations are:
- Walmart Plaza, 5350 Southwestern Blvd., Hamburg.
- Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, 1620 Military Road, Niagara Falls.
- Quaker Crossing, 3445 Amelia Drive, Orchard Park.
- Olean Mall, 400 N. Union St., Olean.
The company said it was closing unprofitable stores to become a "more cost-efficient operator" and to focus on its profitable locations.
Teen-focused fashion retailers such as PacSun, Hollister and Aeropostale have suffered as teens turn to fast-fashion retailers such as H&M and Zara, which turn cutting-edge styles around quickly with highly competitive prices. Mall brands also have suffered from a drop in shopping center foot traffic, and an overall decrease in brick-and-mortar shopping.
Those answering phones at Fashion Outlets, Quaker Crossing and Olean Mall said they did not yet have a closing date for their stores. No one could be reached at the Southwestern Boulevard store.
Rue21 has 1,218 locations in 48 states.
