Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez committed suicide in prison this morning, according to state prison officials in Massachusetts.
Hernandez was found hanging in his cell at the Souza Baranowski Correction Center in Shirley, Mass., shortly after 3 a.m., the Massachusetts Department of Correction said in a statement.
He was taken to UMass Leominster and pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m.
Hernandez hanged himself using a bed sheet attached to his cell window, the statement said, and attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming various items against it.

Hernandez was found not guilty last week in a double murder trial for the killings of two men in Boston's South End in July 2012. He was serving a life sentence without parole for a 2013 killing.
Hernandez was housed in a single cell in the prison's general population housing unit, according to the statement issued by Massachusetts Department of Correction Assistant Deputy Commissioner Christopher M. Fallon.
