EMS to close Amherst store within two months

Eastern Mountain Sports will close its Amherst store within six to eight weeks.

The company announced this week it will close 47 locations across the country, including the one on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst.

The Amherst store is the only EMS location in Western New York. It's located in the Benderson Development-owned plaza called The Boulevard. It will close within the next six to eight weeks, according to an employee.

The company said the locations that were selected for closure were financially underperforming. Its parent company, Eastern Outfitters, filed for bankruptcy protection in February. It has also closed several of its Bob's Stores locations. Bob's vacated the local market in the 1990s.

After the announcement, EMS sent an email out announcing a liquidation sale with everything in the store up to 30 percent off.
