Niagara Falls police arrest 3rd suspect in Jose Hewitt homicide case

Devonte Beasley

Niagara Falls police said Monday evening they have arrested a third person in connection with the April 12 death of Jose Hewitt, a bystander who died during a robbery.

Police charged Devante L. Beasley, 18, of 1626 Weston Ave. and 649 Ashland Ave., Niagara Falls, with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary for his role in Hewitt's death.

Hewitt was found dead in the doorway of 617 Pine Ave., where he lived in a third-floor apartment. Niagara Falls police believe Hewitt opened the door for two people trying to get into the building to rob another occupant.

He was struck on the head, possibly with a gun, by assailants who went up to the second-floor apartment and robbed a man there, according to police. An autopsy on Hewitt determined his cause of death was "a heart attack undoubtedly brought on by the stress and severity of the attack," Chief of Detectives Kelly J. Rizzo said Thursday. The autopsy also found lacerations to Hewitt's scalp due to blunt force trauma.

Shequan O. Herbert, 22, and Stephanie Raymond, 18, both of Niagara Falls, were charged last week with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery. Herbert also was charged with first-degree burglary.

Beasley is scheduled to be arraigned in Niagara Falls City Court at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
