Wilmont Woods of St. Martin’s of the Rochester region won the Irish Jackie Donnelly Award as the outstanding boxer of the tournament in the New York State Golden Gloves boxing championship on Saturday night. He defeated Oluwatimlehin Akeredolu (unattached) of Buffalo by decision in the 165 Open class. The two men have met in the finals three years in a row.
The fight card took place at Buffalo RiverWorks.
Meanwhile, Charles Garner (St. John’s) of Buffalo beat Jahlay Brown (Albany City Boxing) in a unanimous decision to take the 152 Open class. Elon DeJesus (Impact Boxing) of Dunkirk took the 123 Open championship with a split-decision win over Joe Reed (Impact Boxing). Ahmed Aliyev (NWBC) of Buffalo was a winner over
Jessie Noble (St. Martin’s) of Rochester, Garner, DeJesus and Aliyev advanced to the national championships, which will be held in Lafayette, La., next month.
In the 123 Subnovice, Samir Alowbai (NWBCC) of Buffalo topped Jamine Boyld (Albany City Boxing).
In other finals, Brandon Lynch of Albany stopped Nolan Smith of Niagara Falls in the second round in the 201+ open final. Mike Ross (Ultimate Athletic) of Syracuse was a winner over Elijah Austin (Casal’s Boxing) of Niagara Falls.
