Two jail deputies injured trying to stop inmate from banging head

Two deputies were injured Sunday after an altercation with an inmate who was repeatedly slamming her head against a toilet in her cell at the Erie County Holding Center, the Erie County Sheriff's  Department reported.

Arriana Craig, 21, of Buffalo, faces two felony assault charges after she struggled with and kicked the two deputies who tried to stop her from banging her head, the department said.

Deputies first ordered Craig to stop and then "attempted to gain control of the inmate."

One deputy suffered lower body injuries and the suffered upper body injuries. Both  were taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment.

Craig was in custody at the holding center on charges including assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct out of Buffalo, Tonawanda and Evans, the Sheriff's Department said. She was also charged with obstructing governmental administration, as well as administrative disciplinary charges.

Craig was evaluated by county medical professionals and remains housed at the holding center, said Scott Zylka, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.
