Costello was born and raised in Rochester and graduated from Niagara University in 1989. He spent three decades involved in professional baseball, starting in 1979 when he was a batboy for the Rochester Red Wings.
He continued working for the Red Wings, alongside future Bills and Sabres President Russ Brandon, after graduating from college. He spent 12 years with the Tampa Bay Rays before accepting a similar position with UFC in 2010.

Ratner isn't from Western New York, but he has owned a home in Niagara Falls for several years. His wife, the former JoAnn Alvarez, grew up in Amherst and graduated from Sweet Home High before moving to Las Vegas.
A former executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission and a critic of mixed-martial arts when the sport was in its infancy, he has been with the UFC for the past 11 years. He's also a member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame.
