Canisius pulls away from Nichols
Canisius pounced early and late in pulling away from Nichols, 11-5, Thursday in Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association boys lacrosse.
The Crusaders scored the first four goals of the game, two by Max Vitale, but the Vikings used the man advantage to chip away at the deficit. They trailed 5-4 at halftime.
It was all Canisius after the intermission as it scored six times and came within 10 seconds of pitching a second-half shutout.
Joe Cooley scored four of his five goals during the second half and also earned all four of his assists during the first half. Jack Baldwin added three goals and two assists, while Vitale finished with two goals and an assist.
In other boys lacrosse action, Clarence defeated Williamsville East, 10-6, as Jake Bauman recorded four goals and three assists for the winners.
Williamsville North fell behind 1-0 but scored nine of the next 11 goals en route to a 14-10 win over Frontier. Matt Jeffries had six goals and three assists for the Spartans, while Reid Collins had two goals and four assists.
Silver Hoops event is Saturday
Senior standouts from the Buffalo Public Schools (Yale Cup), Monsignor Martin, ECIC and Niagara Frontier League will be in action Saturday in the 20th annual ADPRO Sports/Dale Carnegie Memorial Silver Hoops Classic. The games will be hosted by the Butler Mitchell Alumni at the Grabiarz School of Excellence, 225 Lawn Ave. in Buffalo, off of Military Road.
Teams from the Buffalo Public Schools small schools and the ECIC II All-Stars will meet in the Jim Mastrodicasa Memorial to open the tripleheader at 12:30 p.m.
The John A. Bellanti Memorial game with ECIC I taking on the Niagara Frontier All-Stars will be at 2 p.m. followed by the Paul R. Missana Memorial featuring the Buffalo Public Schools large schools and Monsignor Martin All-Stars at 3:30 p.m.
