High School Extra (April 6): Will North baseball walks off a winner

North edges Lancaster

There’s still lots of season to go but Williamsville North earned a nice win over defending Section VI Class AA champion Lancaster on Wednesday, beating the visiting Legends in 3-2 walk-off fashion in ECIC I baseball.

Josh Surowiec’s one-out single up the middle plated Jake Tuholski with the winning run as the Spartans not only improved to 2-0 but gained a small measure of revenge against a Lancaster program that ended its 2016 season in the sectional semifinals.

Surowiec went 2 for 4 and also pitched six innings, striking out seven while yielding three hits and no earned runs. Dave Harwell picked up the win in relief, stranding Lancaster’s Leugim Castillo (2 for 3) at third after the Oklahoma commit led off the seventh with a hit. Tuholski sparked North’s winning rally with a lead-off single.

Will East baseball triumphs

Elsewhere, Nick Falkiden yielded no earned runs and three hits in Williamsville East’s 6-2 ECIC II win over Hamburg. Drew Elliott had three hits, including a triple, three RBIs and two runs for the Class A state runner-up.

Also in ECIC II, Williamsville South opened with a 3-2 win over Starpoint as John Genau's hit drove in the game-winning run.

In the Niagara-Orleans League, Nick Kubas belted two homers and drove in four runs as Roy-Hart improved to 2-0 with an 8-5 win over Barker.

John Bender had two hits, struck out 14 and yielded one hit during Wilson's 10-0 win over rival Newfane.

Lew-Port softball rallies

Defending Section VI Class A-2 softball champion Lewiston-Porter rallied for an 8-7 win at Niagara Falls in the Niagara Frontier League.

Trailing 7-5, the Lancers scored three times in the top of the seventh to pull out the win with Anna Birganti’s hit driving in the tying and go-ahead runs.

Olivia Littman drove in seven runs, hitting a three-run homer and a double to lead Newfane to a 13-5 Niagara-Orleans win over Wilson.

In ECIC I, Lancaster defeated Williamsville North, 6-4, as Tina Stasiuk went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Madisyn Pepke finished 3 for 4.
