An Erie County Sheriff's deputy helped prevent a fire from heavily damaging a home in Angola on Sunday.
Deputy Gary Mosier spotted heavy black smoke rising from 9229 Old Lake Shore Road and used a fire extinguisher from his patrol vehicle to try to douse flames coming from a truck engine, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The fire spread to the garage and damaged three vehicles, including 1965 and 1969 Ford Mustangs. But Mosier knocked down the fire enough to give volunteer firefighters more time to save the home, the Sheriff's Office Fire Investigation Unit found. A common wall between the garage and the house also was damaged.
Mosier helped the elderly residents evacuate the home. Investigators determined the fire started accidentally in the running vehicle. No damage estimate was available.
