Beer news: Thin Man, Coles, 42 North, NYBP

Thin Man hosts Saison Day

Thin Man Brewery (492 Elmwood Ave.) is one of a small number of breweries and bars across the United States selected to participate in Saison Day, a national event organized by one of the country’s top producers of Belgian-style ales, Allagash Brewing Company out of Portland, Maine. The event celebrates the style of saison (meaning “season” in French), which originated in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium. Saisons were brewed seasonally in the winter using ingredients farmers had left at the end of a harvest -- barley, rye, wheat, spelt -- and stored until the hot summer months for consumption.

The event takes place from noon to 8 p.m. April 8 at Thin Man and will feature a large array of beers from Allagash on tap. One of the brewers from Allagash will be present to answer questions. Thin Man also will release its new saison, Brett the Technique. This saison was made with a large amount of raw wheat and fermented with a traditional yeast. After initial fermentation, brewer Rudy Watkins split the batch four ways and used four distinct Brettanomyces (wild yeast) cultures to condition the beer. Watkins lead tastings of the four variants throughout the day.

Other beers on tap will include Thin Man Regicide (hoppy farmhouse ale), Blackberry Farms Classic Saison, Kent Falls Double Dry Hopped Farmers Table, Dieu Du Ciel Saison Du Parc, Oxbow Grizacca, as well as bottles of Oxbow and Fantome beers. There is no entry fee; pay as you go for the drinks. Call 923-4100.
