Report: Canisius' Dave Smith a finalist for the Rensselaer job

Canisius College hockey coach Dave Smith is a finalist for the head coaching job at Rensselaer, according to a recent media report.

WNYT in Albany reported that Smith is one of four up for the job at RPI after the school fired Seth Appert in early March.

The other candidates are: Ben Barr, a current assistant at UMass and an alumnus of the RPI program including being named team MVP in 2002-03; Bill Riga, the associate head coach at Quinnipiac and Ed Gosek, head coach at Oswego State.

RPI plays in the ECAC and went just 8-28-1 this season. The Engineers last made it to the NCAA tournament in the 1994-95 season.

Smith, the Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year, finished his 12th season at Canisius. He guided the Golden Griffins to their first regular season title in Atlantic Hockey and the program's lone NCAA tournament appearance in 2012-13.
