A district-wide dodge ball tournament and basketball raffle in the Tonawanda City Schools will raise funds to help a nine-year-old in a neighboring school district fulfill his wish to go to Disney World with his family.
The April 6 event will raise funds for the district's wish child, who it identified only as Ricky, from Grand Island. Ricky has cystic fibrosis and a seizure disorder.
He and his family plan to cheer on the dodge ball participants at the fifth annual City of Tonawanda dodge ball and basket raffle, which raises money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Tonawanda High School gym, 600 Fletcher St.
Teachers from all of the district's buildings will participate in a game of dodge ball. Students from Mullen, Riverview and Fletcher elementary schools will donate the class baskets to be raffled off.
Admission is $1, with a family cap of $5. The cost for a sheet of raffle tickets will be $5 and there will also be a 50/50 raffle. Pizza and other concessions will be available.
The Tonawanda City School District has raised over $110,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation over the past 15 years and has granted the wishes of over 20 children and taught a district-wide lesson of empathy and caring.
