Mike Harrington's NHL Power Rankings

Through Friday's games. Last week in parentheses.

1. Washington Capitals. Backstrom is going to get top-5 Hart votes. (1)

2. Pittsburgh Penguins. For now at least, they are the Evil Empire. (2)

3. Columbus Blue Jackets. Waited so long for playoff run, might get hosed by lousy format. (3).

4. Chicago Blackhawks. Slumps in Minny, San Jose leave them as clear West favorite. (4)

5. New York Rangers. Sitting pretty for easier first-rounder against Atlantic champ. (7)

6. Minnesota Wild. Boudreau exasperated by sudden 2-8 slide. (5)

7. Anaheim Ducks. Back in Pacific title chase as they got hot just as Sharks took deep plunge. (10)

8. Montreal Canadiens. If you're thinking first round, they've won 14 straight vs. Leafs. (8)

9. San Jose Sharks. Just ninth in West, 19th overall in goals. (6)

10. Ottawa Senators. Crosby situation aside, Methot injury is a huge loss on blueline. (11)

11. Edmonton Oilers. McDavid on 97-point pace (12)

12. St. Louis Blues. Exploded with 9-1 burst to pull even with Preds for third in Central. (15)

13. Calgary Flames. Lots of fans rooting for playoff-style Battle of Alberta to be rekindled vs. Oilers. (9)

14. Nashville Predators. Just eight regulation home losses, tied for fewest in West with Ducks. (14)

15. Toronto Maple Leafs. Created space for themselves in Atlantic with 7-1-1 run. (16)

16. New York Islanders. Halak returns to net with massive shootout win in Pittsburgh. (17)

17. Boston Bruins. Another end-of-season El Foldo seems to be in the offing. (13)

18. Tampa Bay Lightning. Host Hawks in rematch of '15 Cup final Monday on NBCSN. (18)

19. Carolina Hurricanes. Snuck back into fringe of wild-card race with 6-1-3 run (22)

20. Los Angeles Kings. Disastrous season for Kopitar with 11 goals, minus-10 rating. (19)

21. Florida Panthers. Their visit Monday is only meaningless home game on Sabres' remaining slate. (20)

22. Philadelphia Flyers. Feels like Vanek-Pominville Sabres: Need to break up core. (21)

23. Winnipeg Jets. Just three goals in March for Laine. (24)

24. Buffalo Sabres. Went 3-6-1 in Okposo's absence, which definitely damaged the offense. (23)

25. Detroit Red Wings. Bizarre numbers after 60: NHL-worst 12 losses on OT goals but 8-0 in shootouts. (25)

26. Dallas Stars. Skunked Sharks at home after quit night in San Jose two weeks ago. (26)

27. Vancouver Canucks. Miller at .915 for season -- exactly same as mark in 703 career games. (27)

28. New Jersey Devils. Stink: Hall dumped by Edmonton right into this mess. (28)

29. Arizona Coyotes. Stinkier: One goal or shut out four times in seven games. (29)

30. Colorado Avalanche. Stinkiest: Outscored, 16-2, in third period of last four games. (30)
